Respuesta: significado de .active En tu código es una clase normal y corriente. Si en vez de ser ".active" fuese ":active", lo que pasaría es que cuando tengas el ratón pulsado sobre #layout, el #menu se va a mover 150px a la derecha y tendrá un ancho de 150px.

Respuesta: significado de .active Gracias pero no entiendo. En mi html no hay ninguna clase que se llame active. No tendrá que ver con @media? Te copio el css entero, gracias

Respuesta: significado de .active este selector css significa "el emento con id 'menu' que tenga un ascendiente con id 'layout' y clase 'active'" pues si en tu html no hay ninguna clase que se llame active creo que puedes quitar esos selectores del css con seguridad |
