Error al utilizar atributo inventado en XHTML

Hola, tengo una etiqueta como la siguiente:

Estoy intentando que se valide por el validador de W3C y me reporta lo siguiente:

Parece que no me deja usar atributos propios (necesito tener el atributo x e y porque accedo a la propiedad mediante javascript).

Dice que ponga el DocType a Transitional en vez de Strict pero tampoco funciona.

¿Como puedo hacer que se valide o no aparezca el error?

No puedes hacer que algo no estándar sea estándar.

Alguna otra manera de guardar un parametro (el x e y) en un <area>?

Tu preguntaste como hacerlo validar, la respuesta es no se puede.

Ahora, no se, hay varias cosas que se pueden hacer, una de ellas llamar a una función JavaScript que almacene esos valores en un arreglo global o una de esas cosas, pero depende mucho de qué es lo que haces con ese JavaScript.
