pasar el cont de variable a un archivo

Hola

Quisiera me ayudaran con lo siguiente:

Tengo informacion en una variable y todo el contenido de esa variable lo quiero pasar a un archivo al cual le tengo que sustituir todo su contenido por lo que tiene esa variable.

Lo intente hacer con file_put_contents ($archivo,$cadena); pero no tengo la version 5 por lo que no la puedo usar. y no he leido sobre fopen, fwrite y fclose pero no se como hacerle, les agradeceria enormemente si me ayudaran

Si buscas el archivo PHP_Compat en PEAR podras bajar la funcion aunque es bastante simple crearla:
