que son los META TAG??

Soy nuevo en todo esto, y he leido que las caracteristicas qe estan dentro de los meta tag son importantes.
Alguien me puede explicar para que son?

Los meta tags son elementos que se ubican en el encabezado de una pagina web y contienen informacion acerca de la misma pagina como el autor, el copyrigth o los keywords que usan algunos buscadores, la descripción de la pagina, etc. pueden contener mucha mas informacion pero lo importante es que esta información no se muestra en el navegador

generalmente se ven mas o menos asi:

<meta name="keywords" content="a, b, c, d">
