utilizar focus() dejando espacio.

hola buenas tengo un problema... resulta que tengo un input... y deseo devolver el puntero ni al final ni al comienzo..... es decir hola| o |hola deseo por ejemplo colocarlo en el medio de la palabra ho|la. no se si es por focus u otra funcion...
