Caracteres raros al usar ajax

Al usar el siguiente script me devuelve accentos, ñ interrogaciones y demás con caracteres raros, he intentado buscar la solución pero no hay modo, que puedo hacer?

usa el utf8_encode() o utf8_decode() en tu pagina MostrarMensajes.php

Lo he intentado pero nada, este script es el que me muestra un mensaje, le pongo el decode pero nada..
