I am not in the mood to rant for sure, but I would like to take the time to explain some things that as an AI modder that has had to reverse engineer and experiment many files with medieval 2.
Guys, my team and I have been modding the core AI files for 3 years now. I myself cannot believe I have been doing this for this long. There has been a huge learning curve of course since I was never a real programmer. I started with helping Darth Vader on Darthmod.
Why did I start, because I never felt satisfied with the game. I NEVER played past 80 turns. Because when you can steam roll opponents in both the campaign and the battles. There is no fun in that for me. I have played games now for over 25 years, and have played some of the best strategy games ever. I really loved the idea of having 4x strategy with RT pausable combat. Great combination.
Unfortunately, if I was ever going to enjoy this game, I was gonna have to try and fix it..LOL boy was I in for more than I bargained for. The great thing is and I really thank CA for this, is they really put out most of the files for modders to really be able to mod the game, even the AI. Well in retrospect I do not blame them for closing off the AI in ETW and NTW, you know why they did?
Because they really don't want you to know how terrible they are at coding. Yes that's right I said the truth, and I can openly criticize them because we have found MANY issues with the AI that never should have been. Lack of communications with their teams and lack of real effort in their programming.
Let me tell you something about the game engine they use, it is quite powerful, and way underutilized. I don't buy for a second that they have a new game engine, they only improve it and add sections of the game to it..such as naval combat. The game engine is only as good as the guys that put in the information for it to interpret. Yet they still can't get it right after all these years?? Why? Because they don't care enough to listen.
When I first released the XAI for med 2 under our forums, Jack Lusted told me that the code cannot be changed. That is very far from the truth. Every mod out there today shows that it can be. XAI proves beyond any shadow of a doubt, that code can be changed and added too. However most do not know that the games cache can seriously hinder modding efforts.
I know that Jack Lusted, now knows how the game engine works, and I am sure that he is very sorry for saying the things he said back then. But this is not about that, this is about poor quality output
It is sad that a guy like me with a great team of friends, with no experience in modding AI can prove them wrong. Ultimately, we will release a product that should have been the release version of MED2.
After going through code and rebuilding files, I can say this honestly. There is more talent on these forums than at CA. I surmise that the AI did not change much from RTW to MED 2 (in some cases it got worse). From what I read on these forums, the level of programming that is going on at CA for AI, is sub par. The fans of this series are tired of paying a bunch of graphics guys and Sega's PR machine.
CA/SEGA is making the decisions they make, because they want you to keep buying their products. If you do buy them and are disappointed..it is your own fault. You just have to accept the reality, that this series is doomed for failure.
Hopefully within the next couple of weeks, if you come back to Med2, we will have a bit of redemption for you guys.
