Imposible instalar vmware server en ubuntu 8.04

Estoy intentando instalar vmware en ubuntu 8.04 (kernel 2.6.24-21-generic), y no hay manera..

Siempre que lo intento da este error..

Al decirle que [no], la ejecucion de la instalacion se para...

La cuestion es que no se como compilar el nucleo de nuevo con la version 4.2.4. He intentado dejar como compilador unicamente el gcc 4.2.3 pero tampoco

¿A alguien le ha pasado?

¿Hay alguna solucion?
